Dr. Joseph A. Tylka is a Chicagoland native, growing up in the western suburbs. He graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a B.S. in Biology in 1979. He also received both his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1985, and his Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, 1987, from Loyola University’s School of Dentistry.
Dr. Tylka joined Loyola’s Dental School faculty, after receiving his specialty certificate, teaching pediatric dentistry full-time. In 1990 he was appointed Loyola’s Director for the Division of Pediatric Dentistry. He maintained that position until 1993, the same year he achieved Diplomate status in the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and joined Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove. Dr. Tylka continues his love of teaching by instructing the dental residents in Loyola’s General Practice Residency hospital program. He is also a member of the multispecialty Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Team at Loyola.
He enjoys the mentoring of new dentists and for his contributions Dr Tylka received Loyola’s Dept. of Surgery, 2010, Part-time faculty of the year award. As a faculty member of Loyola and a staff member at Chicago’s Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Dr Tylka lectures on various aspects of pediatric dentistry.
He has a special interest in the clinical aspects of dental sleep medicine and completed a mini residency in dental sleep medicine at UCLA’s School of Dentistry in 2011. He is also a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
